This week, we take a look at how you can welcome in the spring season with your own container gardens. Container gardens are highly versatile, adding color to entrances and windowsills and bringing out the beauty of foliage in apartments and condos. Here are some tips to create a thriving container garden of your own.

✓    Good potting soil is the key to a successful container garden. It retains moisture, allows roots to spread out with ease, and supports effective absorption of nutrients. Avoid garden soil, which is often too dense and heavy for use in containers.

✓    Choose a container with a wide opening and plenty of drainage at its base.

✓    Choose plants based on where you plan to place the containers. Plants like begonia, primrose, and bush lilies thrive in shade, while snapdragons, hollyhock, and red aloe are more suited to full sunlight.

✓    Water your plants regularly. Containers placed in hot, windy, or sunny spots will need extra hydration.

✓    As the seasons change, rotate your container plants from the indoors to the outdoors. This helps the plants flourish and brightens up your living spaces. Try growing different plant varieties that aren’t normally found in your area.

✓    Get creative with your planters. You can keep your container plants in:

  • Recycled tin cans
  • Jars
  • Buckets
  • Pitchers
  • Old containers
  • Wheelbarrows

Just make sure you drill holes in the bottoms of these containers for drainage. Cover the holes with a screen, shards of broken pottery, coffee filters, or mesh tape to keep the soil from falling out.

✓    Space out your plants based on how big they’ll get when fully mature. Your container gardens may start out small, but they can easily crowd in on each other as they grow.

✓    The basic tools you need for your container garden include:

  • Work gloves
  • Potting soil
  • A watering can
  • A hand cultivator
  • A hand transplanter
  • A hand trowel
  • Planters
  • A garden cart
