How to Paint Stucco

Can you paint stucco? It may be one of the most common questions a painter gets. Jordan went on-site with our Paint Like A Pro expert, John Peek from Peek Brothers Painting to get the inside scoop.

Can You Paint Stucco?

Stucco can be painted, and it’s often the economical way to go.  In fact, 99% of stucco ends up getting painted. Even on new houses, some developers will paint the raw stucco to change the color slightly.

If your stucco is stained or has minor cracks or damage, you may want to paint your stucco. Patching these flaws with the original colored stucco may not result in an exact color match because of fading or weathering.

How to Paint Stucco

First, determine if you have any cracks or damaged areas that need repair. Use a wire brush to remove any loose debris. Then apply a patch with a polymer additive to it. The polymer adhesive will ensure the patch adheres to the wall.

Next, wash down the raw stucco to prepare it for paint. Prime the wall with a primer made for stucco. When spraying the primer and paint, use a roller to back-roll the paint to remove any paint shadows.

A proper stucco paint job from a professional like Peek Brothers Painting can last you up to 20 years.
