Preparing for San Diego Wildfires

Everyone in the San Diego area knows that wildfires are a serious, and potentially very dangerous, issue. Especially for those who live in areas at higher danger of wildfires. If you live in an area that puts you at higher risk, there are a few things you can do to help the chances of your home surviving a wildfire.

Preparing for San Diego Wildfires

First, clearly mark your driveway entrances and ensure your name and address are visible from the street so emergency vehicles can easily find and reach your home.

Make sure you plan and practice at least two ways out of your neighborhood.

Ensure there is a water source outside of your home. These can be things such as a small pond, cistern, swimming pool, well or hydrant. Keep a hose long enough to reach any area of your home.

Keep fire tools handy; you may need to fight small fires before emergency responders arrive. These can include things such as a rake, hand saw, ax or chainsaw. Also keep handy a bucket and a shovel.

If building or adding to a structure, select building materials that resist fire rather than fuel it. A good contractor will help you with these choices.

Keep your roof and gutters free of debris, such as dead limbs and needles, that can spread fire.

Have a fire extinguisher and learn how to use it. There is no time to read directions during an emergency.

Keep a tall ladder handy in the event you need to get on the roof to remove combustible debris.

These are just a few of the key elements to preparing for wildfires here in san diego.
