6 Ways To Save Energy At Home

Saving energy at home ultimately leads to saving money on your utility bills, and in San Diego, we know everyone would like to shave a few bucks off their utility payments. After all, we have one of the highest utility rates in the country. The International Association of Certified Home Inspectors offers a list of 10 ways to save energy at home, and for your convenience, we’ve simplified it for you.

6 Ways To Save Energy At Home

1. Evaluate your heating and cooling. New high-efficiency AC units use a fraction of the energy as older units. Modern thermostats also give you increased control over the temperature in your home. Additionally, you should replace your filters regularly to keep your system running at maximum efficiency.

2. Install a tankless water heater. Because tankless units only heat water on-demand, they use less energy than traditional water heater tanks which are constantly heating.

3. Replace dated incandescent light bulbs. LED light bulbs last exponentially longer than dated incandescent bulbs and draw less energy while doing so. Changing the light bulbs in your home can reduce the energy use it takes to light your home by 50% to 75%.

4. Seal and insulate your home. Sealing up your home’s envelope will prevent air transfer between the outside world and your indoor area.  Insulation prevents energy transfer through the walls and attic.

5. Upgrade to energy efficient appliances. ENERGY STAR-rated appliances draw less energy than their dated counterparts. Using appliances responsibly will also reduce energy waste.

6. Install daylighting. Windows, light tubes and skylights in strategic places can do wonders to add natural light to your home. If you home has good natural lighting, you won’t need to rely on electricity to light the space during the day.

These upgrades and practices are easy to implement and can save you a lot of money on you utility bills. Many of these upgrades will also keep you more comfortable in your home!
