In 2016, the Affordable Housing Act was passed. This paved the way for more relaxed regulations on ADUs, additional dwelling units, commonly known as in-law flats or companion units. The popularity of ADUs continues to grow in California with the housing shortage.

The state saw a 63 percent increase in ADU permits in 2017, compared to 2016.  In San Diego, the increase was 71 percent, due to the simplified permit process for qualified homeowners. At Murray Lampert Design, Build, Remodel, we are getting a lot of calls from homeowners interested in ADUs so loved ones can live on the property or even for rental income to subsidize their home mortgage.

There are many types of ADU, from simple garage conversions to detached units or second stories over an existing garage. Building costs vary from job to job with garage conversions being the most economical when there is off street parking available. Hiring a firm that handles zoning research, design and building, streamlines the process and is a cost-effective choice.
