Camp Encourages Girls to Get Involved in Home Improvement

Think construction and home improvement trades are just or men? Think again! Let’s Build Construction Camp for Girls is a week-long camp that offers career guidance and hands-on training for girls 14 to 18. A wide selection of construction trades are focused on as well as architecture, engineering and other related fields. This is the second year the free camp has been held and there were 21 attendees.

Let’s Build Construction Camp works with Habitat For Humanity by incorporating the campers’ projects into the homes that the organization builds. They encourage teamwork among the girls and were impressed with the outcome. The local community is very supportive of this event. Companies sponsor the camp, as well as donate materials.

“There’s no reason why there shouldn’t be more women in construction,” says our Resident Expert Gregg Cantor, who’s also president of Murray Lampert Design, Build, Remodel. “This is a great program that offers valuable training in the construction trade. Hopefully other states will get the message and there will be similar teaching across the US. With our strong economy, home building and remodeling is booming.”

He added that, “In San Diego, there is a major labor shortage, especially in carpentry and framing. It’s nice to see this opportunity to learn valuable skills being offered to women in the construction field.”
