Recently, Dan Sherer, Senior Building Inspector from the City of San Diego was on the Approved Home Pro Show. We discussed the homeowner, contractor and building department relationship and how it helps ensure the success of any construction and home remodeling project.

Building or remodeling the right way, by pulling permits and having that extra set of eyes that comes with building inspections is important for your safety as well as protecting the return on the investment in your home. Also, if you sell your home, providing the city stamped plans, permits and the inspection record with all the approvals signed off provides prospective buyers piece of mind that the work was completed to code.

Some contractors that aren’t Approved Home Pros may say permits are unnecessary. I completely disagree. As the resident expert, I value my 35 year relationship with the building department because we always have the best interest of the homeowner in mind.
