Having a green lawn can be a point of pride, or neighbor envy. And unfortunately, San Diego’s water-saving measures are inviting weeds to stake their turf. Don’t get discouraged, you can still defeat weeds. Ace Hardware has some great tips for getting rid of those pesky, unsightly weeds.
How to Defeat Weeds
First, give the lawn a good raking and remove any dead patches or excess build-up of thatch. Treat your lawn with Ortho Weed-B-Gone lawn weed killer. This will eliminate many of the most common types of problem weeds, including clover, chickweed and oxalis. It’ll even do a pretty good job on unwanted ground ivy. Ortho Weed-B-Gone is rain-resistant and it won’t do much harm the lawn you’re working to keep.
You will get a little grass kill, but once the weeds are taken care of, you can loosen up the soil and reseed the area.
Really tough weeds also often get into the cracks in sidewalks, driveways and patios. If this sounds like the problem you face with weeds, it’s best to use a total vegetation killer like Round-Up Season Long Grass & Weed Killer, so long as there is are no surrounding plants, flowers or lawns.
Another option is a new product called Concern, a fast-acting non-selective weed killer that uses a soap blend to kill nearly all weeds in just a few hours. What’s more, concern targets plant tissues and doesn’t move through the soil, so nearby vegetation is pretty safe. You can replant in the affected area after about two days.
Of course, all of the aforementioned products should be used with caution. Be sure to read all labels, adhere to all applicable safety precautions and use the products as they are intended to be used.
