Details on ‘What Flooring is Best For Your Home’

[Sean] Vinyl flooring has come a long way in recent years so it might be time to revisit it for your home. Nick Dixon from Contract Carpet is here with me today, and you’ve brought in some incredible samples. Thanks for that!

[Nick] Absolutely, thanks for having me!

[Sean] So, this is all luxury vinyl flooring products but I can already tell right off the bat that it looks like wood. So, let’s talk about what aesthetics we can

[Nick] Okay, well it comes in just about every look you can imagine. Right here we have plenty of the wood looks. That’s what most people go for because they’re trying to have the wood floor without the wood floor issues.

[Sean] So, traditional wood but there’s also these really fun colorful woods.

[Nick] Yeah, you can do funky colors, really spice up the house and do something fun with it.

[Sean] Yeah, but what about style or stone?

[Nick] It comes in stone looks, tile looks. The technology is just insane and it makes it look very realistic. The textures are all on there so it just feels real.

[Sean] I feel it and it feels like I would be walking on real wood floors. And this is just a small sample of what’s available at contract carpet, so you can go in and see all of these examples. Tons, just tons of examples to get good and confused with. So, now that we know that the aesthetics are basically endless, what are the benefits of choosing this type of flooring?

[Nick] I’d say the main benefits are it’s durability and it’s waterproof aspects. You can go through the kitchen, right into the bathroom with no worries at all.

[Sean] Which is great, people really love that look because it keeps the house very open.

[Nick] And part of the waterproof is about how the width of the core looks. So these are two different samples. It’s not so much the width of the core but if you look here this is the old technology where it’s basically just compressed sawdust. It’s like a sponge.

[Sean] Don’t get that wet.

[Nick] No, don’t get that wet, very bad idea in the bathroom. But then this one, this is a different waterproof core system that is all the way through top to bottom and you could seriously put it in a bowl of water if you want and it’ll be just fine. So, that’s going to be highly durable- great

for kids, and pets.

[Sean] And this is an affordable flooring as well.

[Nick] Absolutely, it definitely comes in less than a real wood floor.

[Sean] So, what about the downsides- why would you not want to choose this?

[Nick]  I would say the main downsides is the fact that it’s not really a wood floor. I’m a wood guy, I love real wood. It just feels different to me and the longevity. A real wood floor, you can sand, stain and refinish it and you can’t do that with these. It’s just kind of a one time floor and once it does give up, you’re going to have to replace it.
