How To Hire A Painter in San Diego
Expanding on some of the great points CertaPro Painters made recently on The Home Pro Show about how to hire a painter, here are some valuable tips to help you make an informed decision when choosing a painting contractor for your home or business.
1. Do your research.
Start by checking all the companies you are considering online at the Contractors State License Board and the Better Business Bureau. Also be sure to search the internet for company reviews to see what other consumers are saying.
2. Only consider painters who are licensed, bonded and insured.
In San Diego, and all of California, contractors are not required to maintain general liability insurance. Choosing a company who does not carry general liability insurance and/or worker’s compensation insurance puts you, the homeowner, in serious risk in the event that a worker gets injured or causes damages to your property.
3. Get everything in writing!
From the initial quote to how the painter will prep and clean up, you want everything ensured in writing. Be sure to include the type of paint, how many coats, how long it will take and the company’s warranty and touch-up policies.
4. Does your home need lead testing?
California license law requires lead testing on homes built to 1979. If your home is was built before then, an independent lab must test for lead. If any hazardous materials are discovered, remediation must be completed by an independent firm that is properly trained and licensed. You may want to insist that testing be completed before for you finalize the painting contract.
5. Terms of payment.
A well established painting contractor usually would not require a down payment. By California law, a contractor is only allowed to request a down payment of 10 percent or $1,000, whichever is less. Make sure the progress and payment schedule is not too aggressive on the front end and don’t make the final payment until you are completely satisfied with the finished product.
