How To Fix a Running Toilet
A leaky or running toilet is annoying and wasteful. Thankfully, it’s something that is often simple enough to be tackled without the help of a professional. Harry Schwartz from Ace Hardware explains how to fix a running toilet.
Check the Fill Valve
If your toilet is “running” or continuously in refill mode, first check the refill tube that runs from the fill valve, usually on the left side of the tank, to the flush valve, which is in the center of the tank.
The refill tube should be above the water line. If not, trim it down, or adjust your fill level on the fill valve.
Check the Flapper
One other cause of a running toilet is a loose or worn flapper. You can tell if the flapper is causing the problem if the noise stops when you press down on the flapper.
A flapper is easy to replace, but there are many different sizes and mounting methods, so be sure to bring the old flapper to your neighborhood Ace Hardware store so we can match it up with the correct new flapper.
If you’re replacing your flapper often, and you use drop-in toilet tank cleaning tablets, the chemicals in the tablets maybe corroding it. Be sure you get a chlorine resistant flapper in order to extend the life of your flapper.
