Prepare Your Home for Holiday Entertaining
Tis the season for holiday entertaining, which means cooking, cleaning and putting your best foot forward. Get your home ready for dining, parties and out-of-town guests with these tips from our resident design pro, Robin Wilson Carrier.
Whether or not you have overnight guests scheduled, it’s always nice to be prepared. Keep your guest room ready and welcoming with small touches that will go a long way to make your guests feel at home.
Put together a tray or a basket filled with guest goodies like bottled water, magazines and local sweets. Make the room smell warm and inviting with candles or a diffuser. For an added touch, spray the sheets with a scented linen spray.
Spruce things up for the winter season by changing your pillows, throws and area rugs to ones with plusher, heavier textures. Also consider seasonal dish towels, and a basket or tray of teas and coffees to cozy up the living area.
In addition to making the space cozy, you may also need to plan for extra seating. Holiday entertaining often brings more people than usual to the living spaces, so repurpose or add ottomans or stools that can easily be tucked away to increase your seating capacity.
When entertaining, maximize your time with your guests by thinking ahead and setting yourself up with these time-saving tricks:
Set up a bar using a cart, a buffet or a TV console. With a few holiday decorations, this is a festive way to encourage guests to be self sufficient. Plus, it can easily be moved from room to room to accommodate the flow of the party.
Set your dining table ahead of time. Use holiday decor as your centerpiece; wrapping paper even makes a festive, fun and easy table cloth. Consider special touches based on the holiday theme or your individual guests for an extra pop.
