As a resident in San Diego, fire can strike at any time. Over 90% of the county is considered a fire zone. When building or remodeling in San Diego, there are minimum requirements to meet current fire codes, and I recommend talking to your designer or contractor about additional steps to protect your family and home in the event of a fire. There are great fireproof and fire restrictive products available.
For example, if you have an existing home with wood shakes, or wood siding, I recommend installing composite materials. This can greatly reduces the risk of your home burning in a fire.
Also, roof overhangs should be constructed of fire resistant material or large wood timbers. Another step you can take to protect your home is creating and maintaining a defensible space with landscaping or hardscape. Lastly, brush management, especially in rural areas is very important.
